01 Prestatyn to Trelawnyd

 

Walk towards the town from the Offa’s Dyke Path sculpture. Cross the road at the traffic lights. Continue over the Railway Line at the Station to reach the High Street. Walk up the High Street and directly across at the top to Ffordd Las.

 

Continue ahead along the road when the Offa’s Dyke Path leaves it. Go around the first bend and up the road which ascends very steeply. At the next bend take the footpath on your left. Follow the path as it goes diagonally up to pass to the left of the Masts at the top of the hill. Continue to the track.

 

Cross over this into the field. The path now goes alongside the wood past the site of St Elmo’s Summer House. Walk to the end of the open field but do not go over the stile. Turn right go over another stile near a pond. Go diagonally left over the crest to go down past the edge of a copse to the road.

 

Turn right along the road and at the junction turn left. Follow the road to the bend. Here cross over the stile into the field towards the wood ahead. When you come a kissing gate you can turn right to visit the top of Y Gop – a mysterious mound – and then down to the village of Trelawnyd. Alternatively continue straight ahead and down to the road to the village.

02 Trelawnyd to Rhuallt

 

Cross over the road in the middle of the village. Go through the farm gate and follow the fence to go over a stile. Turn left and over another stile. Go diagonally right to the bottom right hand corner of the field.  Cross over the stile and go right to the lane. Cross over the bridge and take the footpath left.

 

This section is also part of the North Wales Pilgrims Way. Follow the path to go over a stile to join a bridleway. Bear left and, immediately after the derelict building, leave the bridleway by going directly ahead across the field to a footbridge.

 

Cross this and then go diagonally left to the top corner of the field. Cross over the stile and walk with the hedge on your left to cross another stile on a track. Turn right downhill at this point.

 

Go through the gate and continue along the track – this area can be extremely muddy. When you meet another track turn right over the stream and through gate or over ladder stile into the field.

 

Continue with the hedge on your left to follow a well waymarked path across fields and through a wood to a lane. Turn right and take the footpath on your left, Follow to the next lane.

 

Cross over and take the footpath opposite. This goes across fields to eventually reach a fence. Keeping this on your right hand side until you reach the corner. Then go directly ahead towards the gate with a stile close by. Cross over and follow the track away from the farm. Shortly cross over the stile on your left and go directly across the field towards the cottage. Cross over on to the road.

 

Cross over the road and take the footpath directly opposite and follow to the lane. Turn right along it passing a road junction on your left. Take the next footpath on your left. This is Offa’s Dyke Path follow this route into the village of Rhuallt.

03 Rhuallt to Bodfari

 

Go directly ahead at the cross roads to go under the A55, Just after the bridge and opposite the farm entrance take the footpath on your left.. Go straight and then diagonally right to briefly rejoin the Offa’s Dyke Path to the road.

 

Turn left and almost immediately go right, leaving the Offa’s Dyke Path, on a footpath alongside the edge of the wood. Cross over the stile to exit the wood and go diagonally right up hill. Bear left towards the cottage below. Cross over stile to walk with the fence on your right to cross over another stile to join a bridleway. Turn right along it to the lane. At the cottage, on your left, take the footpath in front of it. Follow this path into the village of Tremeichion.

 

Turn left along the road and take the footpath opposite.  The path goes diagonally left uphill across the field to a stile by a house. Cross over and go right along a track. Almost immediately take the stile on your left to go down, diagonally,  across the field.  Cross over a stile and continue across the valley bearing left upwards towards a bungalow. Pass to the front of the bungalow to reach a lane. Turn right down it.

 

When the road bends sharply right go through a kissing gate on your right. Follow this into the woods. Follow the path up  through the  Graig Woods and to the lane.  (A detour to the top of the Graig is well worth the effort.) Cross over and take the footpath opposite. This too goes through a small wood on to another lane.  Go directly ahead and continue to the cross roads.

 

Turn right along this lane and at the junction turn right again. Follow the lane until just before it becomes very steep. Here take the footpath along the lower drive towards the house and into the field. Now head to walk alongside the edge of the wood to a stile at a junction of paths. Go over this to join the ODP. Follow downhill and with the hedge on your left hand side walk down to the lane and the village of Bodfari.

04 Bodfari to Cilcain

 

Note this section is different from that on the OS Maps and in the Guide Book

 

Cross over the road near the garage to go through a Kissing Gate. You are now on the Offa’s Dyke Path. Follow this until it leaves right over a stile at Grove Hall. Continue ahead up the lane to the very top. Turn right and take the track on to open country. As you enter the open access immediately turn left through a gate on to a bridleway.

 

Continue with the hedge and fence on your left and follow this bridleway along the side of the hill. The bridleway eventually bends away right up to a small flat area and waymarker post. Go straight ahead and then down the other side to join another bridleway. Turn left along it. This is again Offa’s Dyke Path. Follow this to the Pine Trees at the top of the pass.

 

Turn right through the gate. When Offa’s Dyke Path goes left up hill continue along the wide track. Follow this as it contours along the side of Penycloddiau. You eventually reach the road. Turn left and then right along it.

 

Take the bridleway right and again follow as it very gently climbs to another road. Turn left and walk up to the cattle grid. *Continue ahead and as the road bends to the left take the track through the gate on your right. Follow this track as it goes around the hill and to the cross roads at Pedair Groesffordd.

 

Go ahead and down to the village of Cilcain

 

*This route is different from that on the OS Maps which goes over Moel Famau before going down to Cilcain.

05 Cilcain to Loggerheads

 

From the Church walk past the White Horse Pub and turn right to take the road signposted to Llanferres.  Turn left to enter the Community Woodland. Follow the path as it winds its way through the wood and down the slope to exit (left) along the footpath. Follow to the lane.

 

Walk right down the lane and over the bridge. Follow the road up the other side to a footpath on your left. This takes you to the Leete. Follow this route to Visitor Centre in Loggerheads.

06 Loggerheads to Grianrhyd

From the Visitor Centre cross over the bridge to the A494 and turn left to walk alongside it.  Cross over the A494 at the Boundary Stone and take the footpath opposite. Follow this through the grounds of Colomendy Outdoor Activity Centre. The path joins a bridleway turn left along it. Continue along the edge of the wood. At the track, cross over and walk along the path with the fence on your right. Follow this footpath to the lane and turn left to the village of Maeshafn

 

From the Village Green fork right at the road junction and take the footpath on your right down the drive past the pub.  The path now enters fields and you pass a derelict house on your right. Continue uphill to the stile on the horizon.The path continues to pass the now disused quarry at Burley Hill to reach its entrance.

 

Take the footpath opposite which climbs up on towards Bryn Alyn. When you reach the track turn left along it.  Shortly you reach some sheep pens on the left of the track. Here turn right and cross a wide field. Cross over the “green track” to the stile. Continue to the next stile on your right and cross over it. This takes you to a lane. Turn left along it to the village of Eryrys.

 

At cross roads turn right past the pub. Continue along the lane and over the minor crossroads.  Continue down hill to the bottom and, when there is a distinct kink in the road, take the footpath left uphill. The path goes between limestone rocks. Go directly across this area to walk alongside the fence that joins from the left. Follow to the road. (Grianrhyd is a mile to the left along the road.)

07 Grianrhyd to Llandegla

Cross over the road and follow the lane uphill. When the road turns left take the path on your right through the lorry yard.  *Go directly across this yard to go through the gate but go over the stile into the copse. Walk through it and over a stile into the field. Go diagonally left to the far corner of the field. Go around and up the hill bearing to the right. Here you join a green track which goes past the farmhouse to the lane.

 

Turn left along the lane and as it begins to go uphill take the stile on your right.Cross over it and walk with the hedge on your right to go over another stile. Turn left over the stream and cross over a stile into a large field. Go directly to the far right hand corner of the field. Bear right up hill and then left to a ladder stile on your right. Climb over it to go through the wood to another stile. Go directly ahead, with broad views of the Clwydian Hills, until you reach a grassy track.

 

Turn left down this track to a stile at the bottom into the wood. Cross over the next stile and turn right on to the track. This leads towards the former Bod Idris Hotel. As you approach the property turn left along the recently diverted footpath to the front of the property.

 

Go down the drive over a Cattle Grid.  When the road bends sharply left, take the footpath ahead through the gate. The path goes diagonally right to and through another gate.

 

Follow this waymarked  towards Penybryn Farm. Join the road and turn right and then take the footpath down the hill.  Go over a footbridge and follow the footpath to a  stile near the lake. Cross the field heading to the right of the houses ahead. Cross over stile into the lane and turn left to join the Offa’s Dyke Path which is followed through the village.

 

*This section has been altered and is different to that on the OS Maps. It avoids the often muddy farmyard at Allt y Gymbyd.

08 Llandegla to Llangollen

The Clwydian Way follows the Offa’s Dyke Path to the lane at Hafod Bilston. Turn right along the lane. (The route in the Guide Book and on the OS Maps follows this lane to the A 542 to the top of the Horseshoe Pass at the Ponderosa Restaurant. The maps accessible via the Website now    follow the route below.)

 

Take  the take footpath, on left and at the edge of the wood, after Graig Farm. At first the path follows a track which it then leaves, right, to cross over a stream. The route is waymarked and follow it until you reach a track going up hill. Cross over and follow the footpath directly ahead. This at first goes uphill away from the track and over the moorland. Follow until you reach a fence on your right. (Note this section can be muddy.)

 

Take the lane at the back of the Ponderosa café. Take the well waymarked  footpath (to Eglwyseg)  Follow down into the valley and  up the other side. The path levels out and bends right to go through some sheep pens. Continue to follow the main path passing a cottage at Glyn and down to the lane.

 

Turn right along this lane and shortly take the footpath on your right to go over the bridge. Continue with the wood on your right and then past the cottage. Bear left to go down and over the stream once more. Follow the footpath towards the farm at Tanyfron. The route keeps below the farm.

 

At the lane turn left along it to pass the farm at Tanyfron. Almost immediately take the footpath along the track on your right.

 

Follow this, at first, largely level footpath and then gradually uphill. From this path there are excellent views over Valle Crucis Abbey down on your right. When the path reaches the road turn right and then left at the road junction.

 

After the lane crosses over the stream take the footpath left. This leads to the far top corner of the field. Go over the stile to Open Country. Turn left and walk with the fence on your left. The path leads to a lane. Take the footpath on your right to the summit of Castell Dinas Bran.

 

After walking through this ancient monument take the path down the other side to the town of Llangollen.

09 Llangollen to Corwen

 

Take the Canal Towpath from the Horse Drawn Boats along towards the Horseshoe Falls. After passing the falls take the footpath to the road at Llantysilio Church. Turn left along the road.

 

Go straight ahead at the road junction. Keep right when the road forks and walk into the Llandynan. In the middle of this hamlet take the footpath forking off to the left to walk across the fields to Rhewl.

 

After passing the pub on right take the lane, also on right, past the chapel and uphill. This is a byway which goes through the mountain range. At the summit of the pass fork left down towards the valley. When the bridleway is reached turn left along it. This leads to a lane.

 

Cross over this lane and continue along the bridleway ignoring the track going off right. When the bridleway reaches the road turn left along it. Almost immediately take the footpath on the left going diagonally up and across the field. Continue over the hill to the village of Carrog.

 

Walk through the village ignoring the road forking right (towards the school) and the next lane, also going up right, to turn right up the third lane.* Take the next footpath on your left follow to the road. Turn right and follow to go to Corwen.

 

*An alternative to this last section is available.  Instead of taking this footpath continue further up the hill to take the bridleway on your left. Follow this recently improved route as it goes around the side of the hill to the farm of Tan y Gaer. (This is at the foot of the Hill Fort of Caer Drewyn.)  Turn left down the lane to the staggered cross roads. Cross over and take the road into Corwen.

10 Corwen to Llanfihangel

 

Leave Corwen by walking past the Owain Glyndwr Sculpture. Stay alongside the A5 to go over the bridge. Once over the bridge take the footpath left towards the river and follow across field and over the lane to the Rhug Estate Farm and Café.

 

Turn left along the A5. Before the bridge cross over the A5 and take the lane opposite. Go straight ahead at the road junction. Turn left at the next junction. When the road bends, and before it reaches the farm drive, take the footpath left. This passes to the left of the farm buildings.

 

Follow the footpath to the lane and turn left to walk into the village of Betws Gwerfil Goch.

 

Turn left in the centre of the village and cross over the bridge. Turn right up the next lane. Take footpath right along the track towards the farm of Tir Barwn. Go between the farm buildings and walk with the large farm shed on your right. Continue to the lane. Turn left and walk up to the road junction.

 

At the junction take the footpath on your right which appears to go back towards the river. Go up the hill and then walk with the fence on your right towards the wood. Keep this wood on your left until you reach the farm of Pant y Mel Mawr. Take the farm drive up to the lane and turn right.

 

After the road crosses the stream take the footpath on your right. Follow towards the farm and then left along the farm drive to the road. Continue along the road to Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr.

11 Llanfihangel to Pont y Brenig

 

Cross over the bridge and walk up alongside the road. At the top of the hill take the footpath on your left. This section of the route is also part of the Hiraethog Trail. Follow this to the village of Pentre Llyn Cymmer.

 

Follow the road past the Sewage Farm and over the stream. Pass the farm entrance to take the footpath right. This takes you past the farm and to a farm track. Turn right along this track to walk up towards the right hand side of the dam. Walk over the dam to the Visitor Centre.

 

Leave the Visitor Centre and continue along the Forestry Road. When this road bends sharply right continue ahead to where another track crosses. (Pont y Brenig is the bridge over the stream to your right.)

12  Pont y Brenig to Llansannan (Conwy Section)

 

From the Picnic Site at Pont y Brenig turn left along the forest track to the road. Cross over the road. Follow the bridleway out of the forest and across the Nature Reserve. After passing the woodland on your right take the bridleway right. Follow past the farms and buildings. When you reach the small woodland on the left go through gate and follow footpath to the main road. Turn right and walk to the next junction,

 

Cross over the road and on to the quiet lane. This goes over the dams at Llyn Aled and Llyn Aled Isaf reservoirs.   After the latter take the footpath going off to the right.  Care is needed here you must make sure you go through the gate and walk with the fence on your right. Follow this path  passing the farms at Nant y Merddyn. Eventually you reach the farm drive to Cleiriach. Just before you reach the farmhouse take the stile down to your left into the field. Follow the footpath past Hendre Aled and Hendre Aled Cottage,

 

Go straight ahead at Hendre Aled Cottage. Continue to the next farm at Caedu. Here fork right to go down hill and diagonally down to enter the wood. Follow the footpath through the wood and to a large footbridge. Cross over it and take the footpath going uphill to Rhyd-loew farm.

 

Go the road and turn left. At the junction turn left downhill. This eventually becomes a track. Follow the track down and alongside the river to the road at the bridge. Cross over and follow footpath to go over footbridge. Climb up the bank after the bridge and turn left to follow the footpath to go through the farmyard to the road. Turn right along the road and take the footpath on your right to the village.

13  Llansannan to Denbigh (Conwy Section)

 

Leave the village by walking over the bridge. Take the footpath on the left. Follow this until it is crossed by a track. Turn left over the bridge and towards the farm house. Walk behind the farmhouse up the track. Leave it to go right to pass in front of the bungalow. After the bungalow the path joins a forest track. Take this to cross the river and towards the settlement of Bryn Rhyd yr Arian.

 

At the road turn left then fork right. Immediately turn right along the next lane. When you reach the wood take the footpath going off to the left into it. Follow the track and at the fork turn left up hill to leave the woods to go into the field. Go uphill to the left of the summit and to the corner of the field. Cross over a stile and walk with the fence on your right.

 

The path now curves to the right. Follow it with the fence also on your right. The path then dips down towards the valley to go to two gates. Go through the one on the left to walk with the fence again on your right. Go through the gate towards farm where a track is joined which leads past the cottages to the road.

 

Turn right along this road and at the junction turn left. Follow this lane up and around the side of Moel Fodiar. The road enters a lane with a farm on the left. Take the next footpath on your right through the small copse into the field. Go ahead and through to the other side of the hedge. Turn left and follow the path down to Plas Coch Farm.

 

Go straight ahead and through the gate and down across the field.  The path crosses another two fields and a small footbridge. Bear right to the road. Cross over the road and take the footpath towards the wood. Walk along the footpath until a track is reached. Turn left along it and follow through and out of the wood. After crossing the stream take the track going left over the stream again. Go through the walkers’ gate and follow footpath along the side of the wood. Go through another gate into the field and bear right to the road. Turn right along it into the village of Henllan.

 

Go past the Church and fork right to the next junction. Turn left along Denbigh Street and then take the footpath along Ochr y Bryn. Follow this footpath along the edge of Foxhall Wood and across fields to the farm. Do not go on to the access road but turn right along the footpath to briefly go through the wood.  Follow the footpath to the far corner by the farm.

 

Do not go on to the road but turn sharp right along the track. Just before the road turn left over a stile on to a muddy track. Follow this past the farm and to the road at the junction. Turn right to go past a large lay by and to go through a kissing gate. Follow this footpath to the lane at Galch Hill. Turn left and go over the stile. Follow the footpath to go through the housing estate. Cross over the road* and follow the path down to the town of Denbigh.

14   Pont y Brenig to Rhewl

 

From the Picnic Site at Pont y Brenig walk over the bridge and up the track. This route has now been upgraded and improved. Continue along the route as it goes between the road and the lake to a lane. Turn right along the lane towards the reservoir and a small car park.

 

Go through the gate and along the track.  After passing the settlements the track bends left then right. Leave it at this point to pick up the footpath across the side of the hill (the OS Map is incorrect here). The path goes down towards a stream and then left alongside. Follow into the forest. The route is now also part of the Brenig Way. Eventually you leave the forest to go down a track across farmland. Follow the road to a junction and turn left.

 

After the road crosses the stream take footpath on right. Follow this until it joins a track. Turn right along the track. Ignore the track going right. The track eventually becomes a path and after crossing the stream reaches the village of Cyfylliog.

 

Go past the Church to the road junction. Turn right then left to go over the stream. Take the footpath on the right. Follow this uphill, into the forest and to the lane. From here you can continue upwards to the Memorial at Pincyn Llys. After visiting this excellent viewpoint return to the lane.

 

Turn left along the lane. Follow the lane until you come to the entrance to the Forestry Car Park. Turn right and walk through this car park. You are now on a forest track, At the junction fork left to go behind the houses to the lane. Turn left to walk to the bridge at Bontuchel.

 

Go over the bridge and uphill. When the road bends continue ahead (right). When this lane bends left go ahead into the wood. The path now follows alongside the River Clywedog down to the village of Rhewl, This is an old road and is known as Lady Bagot’s Drive.

15  Rhewl to Denbigh (A541)

 

Cross over the road to the road opposite. At the road junction turn left and then right to go past the Chapel. Follow footpath across the fields to the road. Turn right passing the drive to Glan Clwyd and taking the narrow lane. At the junction bear left to go over a bridge. Take the footpath on your left and follow it alongside the River Clwyd. Follow this riverside path as it crosses two roads at bridges. At the third Pont Clwyd turn right along the lane.

 

Walk along the road turning left at the staggered cross roads. At the next junction turn left again. Just before the bridge over the river take the footpath on your right to walk alongside the River Clwyd once more. Follow the path until you reach the drive to the track to  Lleweni Hall. (Note this section is prone to flooding and can be very muddy during wet periods see alternative below.)

 

As an alternative stay on the road crossing the bridge above. Walk past Kilford Farm (on your right). Take the next track on your right. This is an access road to Lleweni Hall. Follow it passing between the Hall and the Farm and over the river to where the main route joins.

 

Continue to walk away from the Hall. As you approach the houses cross over to the  footpath on your left along the edge of the wood,  Cross over the field towards the corner of the wood ahead, Continue to follow this path  until you reach the A 541

16  Denbigh A541 to St Asaph

 

Turn left along this busy road. At the road junction fork right to continue following the A541. At the crossroads turn right and walk along the lane. Take path left  opposite Dedwythfa, the large  house on the right. Follow this path with the hedge to your right and then through the woods to Perthewig. The path now crosses a series of fields to reach the road. Turn right to go over the bridge at Pont Llannerch.

 

Continue ahead and take the footpath on the left. Go diagonally right to cross into the next field. Follow the footpath to the road. Turn left along the road and take the footpath at the edge of the woods. The path follows to the left of hedge and fence lines to a large footbridge.

 

Cross over it and keeping walking in a straight line. This section of the route is shared with the North Wales Pilgrims Way. Cross over another footbridge and then two fields to arrive at the disused railway line. Turn right along it and follow the signposted path past the school to reach the road. Turn right to the Cathedral at St Asaph.

17  St Asaph to Dyserth

 

At the Cross Roads by the Cathedral take Chester Road out of the City. Follow this to the A55. Cross over the bridge and take the lane ahead. At the corner join the footpath along a track. Pass to the left of the first farm and buildings leaving the track where it bends right towards the next farm. The path is now well defined on the ground. When you reach another distinct path, on the right, turn right along it. Continue to join the track at the farm and to the road.

 

Turn left along the road and take the next footpath right into the field. Follow this path to another road turning right along it. When the road bends take the footpath directly ahead alongside the wood. Cross the lane and take footpath alongside edge of field and towards the farm ahead. At the lane turn right and almost immediately left.

 

Follow this lane as it curves right and take footpath on left to go down over a footbridge. Walk up hill to the lane and turn left to the village of Cwm. After passing the Church take the footpath right towards the wood. Walk through the wood to the lane. Cross over to footpath opposite and follow to go over a stile to a track.

 

Cross over this to a stile. You are now on the Offa’s Dyke Path. Follow this down into the valley and over the stream. Take the left fork in the road and follow it to go around a bend. Here take the footpath right. This leads to the main road. Turn left along it towards Dyserth

18  Dyserth to Prestatyn

 

Cross over and walk to the Dyserth to Prestatyn Walkway. Follow this until the second bridge over a road. Leave the Walkway here and go right up hill to pick up a footpath on the left. This leads to the Car Park at Graig, Cross it and walk up to go through a gate in the wall. Turn left along the road. At the junction turn left along a lane and almost immediately right to rejoin the Offa’s Dyke Path. Follow this to Prestatyn.

19 Denbigh to Penycloddiau (Link Path)

 

Note this section is different from that on the OS Maps and in the Guide Book

 

From the layby on A 543 (SJ 042 649) go through the Kissing Gate. Follow this improved route around outside the wood to a farmhouse. Turn left and immediately go over a stile and follow the path to the houses. Walk out of the estate and turn right to the junction.

 

If you have visited the Town or Castle you can rejoin the route here.

 

Cross over the road and take the footpath opposite. Follow this path to its junction with another footpath and turn right along it. Follow this path until you reach the lane.

 

Cross over and follow the footpath over the disused railway to a lane. Turn right along it to reach the main road at a bridge. Cross over and go past Brookhouse Mill to the lane.

 

Turn left along the lane and at the chapel take the footpath alongside it. Follow to the next road at the church. Turn right along the road and follow to the farm complex on your right (Kilford Farm).

 

Here take the track opposite and follow to Lleweni Hall. At the junction of paths go straight ahead. Go over the river at the Cattle Grid. (where the main route of the Clwydian Way joins from the right.) Continue along the track.

 

After passing the properties and with the wood on your left continue along the track to the next fence. Here leave the track and go right along the field edge Go past the farmhouse to the road and turn left into the village of Aberwheeler.

 

Go directly across the staggered cross roads. Continue ahead at the the next junction turn right to Ty’n y Celyn Farm.  Ignoring the footpath going ahead to a track and turn right along another track. Fork left into the field and follow the footpath to the left of the hedge (make sure you are on the correct footpath)

Continue with the hedge on your right to the lane. Turn left and follow  to where the road bends to the right. Continue straight ahead along the access road to the properties. After passing these join another track. This is the main Clwydian Way route (section 3).
